From the Desk of JT, the Beer Logger (B-Logger)
- Mission: 50 Beers to 5000
- Beer #: 4985
- Location: Offshore from Palm Harbor, Florida
- Beer: Boat Story
- Brewery: Fort Myers Brewing Company
- Vibe: Salt air, sunburn pending, rods bending
- Mood: Grinning, grateful, mildly windblown
🎣 The Day: 5.0 (out of 5) All Around
When you go boating, you hope for two things:
- A boat story
- A fishing story
We got both. And then some.
Huge thanks to Mike Dykstra for hosting an absolutely top-tier day on his fishing machine of a boat, launching out of Palm Harbor and heading into the Gulf with purpose.
The cooler filled.
The rods bent.
The stories grew taller by the minute.
We were pulling up:
- Grouper
- Snapper
- Mango
- And more
Sun high. Water sparkling. That gentle hum of engines and optimism.

🍺 Beer #4985: Boat Story (3.5)
When prepping for a day on the water, you want the right beer.
Not:
- Too heavy
- too experimental
- something that demands a tasting seminar mid-cast
So when I went shopping and spotted Boat Story from Fort Myers Brewing Company, it felt almost too perfect.
I mean… come on.
You can’t ignore a sign like that.
JT On-the-Water Breakdown:
- Drinkability level: High (important on a boat)
- Heat compatibility: Excellent
- Vibe match: Couldn’t be better
- JT rating: 3.5
This was a crisp, easygoing, sunshine-friendly beer — the kind you can sip while pretending you totally meant to catch that last fish you lost at the boat.
Was it the most complex beer I’ve ever had?
No.
Was it exactly right for the moment?
Absolutely.
🌊 Salt Air & Perspective
There’s something about being offshore that resets everything.
No emails.
No schedules.
No overthinking tasting notes.
Just:
- Lines in the water
- Friends laughing
- Coolers cracking open
- And that slight, unspoken competition about who caught the biggest fish
Boat days aren’t about perfection.
They’re about presence.
🐟 The Stories (Already Improving)
By the time we headed back toward shore, the fish were:
- Slightly bigger
- Slightly more dramatic
- And slightly harder to land than originally reported
As they should be.
A good fishing story improves with every retelling — just like a good beer memory.
All stories aside, I did catch my first big grouper ever! How big. Well, it wasn’t easy to get in the boat. Side note – start working out more! And drinking less? Let’s not go to far. Come on! See the photos below. After catching this lunker, I needed a break. You can tell that I’m still breathing hard in this video. 🙂
🍻 JT Final Thoughts
Beer #4985 wasn’t about intensity.
It was about setting.
And the setting?
Top tier.
- Great friends
- Incredible boat
- Fish in the cooler
- Sun on the water
Boat Story earns a 3.5 in the glass.
The day earns a 5.0 in life.
Cheers to Mike.
Cheers to the Gulf.
And cheers to days that remind you why you do this in the first place.
Having a blast, with beer! 🍺🚤
